How Delays or Cancellations are Determined

  • We take safety seriously. Before deciding whether or not to delay or cancel school, we consult with outside parties to ensure we make the best decision for our families and staff.

    How are decisions made?

    • District administrators work with local, county, and state partners to assess the safety of the conditions.
    • The primary reason to delay or close school is for student and staff safety.
    • Road conditions are heavily considered. We work closely with state and county highway departments to assess road conditions. TCSC staff also drive roads to determine conditions.
    • Forecasted weather for the day is included in the decision-making process.
    • TCSC subscribes to a number of weather forecasting services to provide real-time information regarding conditions.

    When are decisions made?

    • We make every effort to decide before 6 AM to delay or cancel school.
    • In the rare case where early dismissal is required, we will provide families with as much notice as possible.

Types of School Closures

  • TCSC has two types of school closures: eLearning and traditional. Elearning days will be clearly stated in all communications, and we will utilize two eLearning days in the case of school closure. The remaining days will be considered traditional closings.

    eLearning:

    • Students will use their school-owned device at home
    • Assignments for the day are posted to Google Classroom by 9:00 AM
    • Teachers will respond to emails throughout the school day
    • Teachers may offer virtual meetings to their whole class, as help sessions, or to individual students
    • Due dates for work will be provided by the teacher

    Traditional:

    • Traditional snow days must be made up using our built-in snow make-up days

Communication

  • Families will be notified using text, email, and voice calls from BrightArrow, our mass communication system. Please opt in if you haven't already. Communication will also come from local TV, radio, and social media outlets.

Make-up Day Schedule

  • In cases when school must be cancelled, these days must be made up. In 2022, the General Assembly passed legislation limiting the number of eLearning days. After eLearning days are exhausted, all schools must use snow make-up days to ensure students attend 180 days.

Helping Your Student be Successful During eLearning

    • Students should log in early and work during the normal school hours. This allows them to ask teachers questions throughout the school day.
    • Students should use their device while it is on a hard surface (desk, table, counter, etc)
    • Students should have minimal distractions while doing their lessons (TV off or out of sight, other students playing elsewhere, etc)
    • School supplies should be readily available (pencils, paper, crayons, etc)
