Good afternoon, as the new superintendent of schools at Tipton Community School Corporation, I want to take this opportunity to share my excitement about being at Tipton, a school corporation that prides itself on teaching the whole child. Nothing states this more than the successes the district has accomplished in athletics, agriculture, the arts, and most importantly, academics. Our focus will continue on teaching the whole child as we confront the challenges of an uncertain future and work to keep the new normal as normal as possible!
I know that you are concerned about your children’s education and daily care and are patiently awaiting more details about our reopening plans. Last week, the Tipton County schools released a joint statement with some details on how we, together, will handle the return of our students and staff in accordance with our local, state, and national recommendations and guidelines. We still have much to do and more information to process before the plan is ready for the public.
Last week, our “Return to School Parent Survey” was sent out. If you did not receive one it is attached here or you can find it on our corporation webpage by clicking “COVID-19 Information” and strolling down to “Parent Information”. Your feedback will provide us with vital information in terms of understanding staffing and facility needs and help us gather crucial planning information. Some of the questions include:
Will your student be returning to school? In-person or virtually?
Will your student ride the bus to school?
Does your student have reliable internet access at home?
By answering these questions, we will be able to gain important insights on what our students will need when they return in August and what we will have to do to best meet those needs. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the survey.
Our School Reopening Task Force, comprised of 20 stakeholders, in cooperation with the Tipton County Health Department, have been composing and revising our plan almost daily. Once we gather feedback from our surveys, discussions, and work sessions, and make necessary revisions, we will share our plan with our School Board for review and approval at our Tuesday, July 14 meeting. I expect to have a detailed, finalized plan available to share with our school community on Friday, July 17.
As we prepare for our reopening, we appreciate the thoughtful and often impassioned input from many of you. It is understandable when children are involved. Some are in favor of seeing face coverings required, others who argue that face coverings should be optional. Some who demand that physical distancing be required; others who say, “business as usual, please.” I have reminded our Task Force members, and I will remind you, that all perspectives are derived from what parents believe is in the best interests of their children.
There is so much we don’t know and experts are still learning about this virus. Until there is a solid treatment and/or vaccine, the plan we are forming will be in the best interest of the health and well-being of ALL students and staff at Tipton Community School Corporation. Also, please understand this plan will be fluid and ever-changing based on new information from the Indiana Department of Education, our local and state health departments, and Centers for Disease Control.
I encourage you to stay engaged, informed, and share the content of this message and all our messages with your friends and neighbors who have children in the Tipton Community School Corporation. Thank you for your patience and assistance as we finalize our plan and ready for the school year ahead.
While you are enjoying the special festivities of our nation’s independence day this weekend, please take the opportunity to step back and cherish your life and the country we live in while appreciating the sacrifices people made to give us some of the freedoms we enjoy today. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
