TMS Activity Period

Tipton Middle School implemented an Activity Period on Wednesday for students to explore their interest at the beginning of this school year.  Activity period began on the first Wednesday after Labor Day for first semester and the second Wednesday after Winter Break for second semester.  Activity period meets on Wednesdays, the last half hour of the day.  Clubs are now in full swing and being enjoyed.  Check with your student and see if they are participating in any of the following clubs:  Book Club, Builders Club, House of Cards, Robotic Club, Science Club, NJHS, Yearbook Club, Art Club, Chess Club, Color Club, NANOWRIMO, Academic Team, Spell Bowl, and Student Council.   Except for Student Council and National Jr. Honor Society, students are allowed to select club membership.  Teachers were asked to volunteer for club creation and sponsorship. Activity Period was established so that all students who choose may participate in these clubs without parents having to provide transportation to the monthly meetings.  Administration at TMS hopes that this has enabled all students to become active in TMS Clubs and allowed the chance to have a purpose and connection with the school.

School Delays and Closings

As we all know, Indiana weather can be very unpredictable. During the past several years, we have seen an increase in inclement weather. It looks like that may hold true again this year. You will be hearing of school delays or closings and may even wonder a time or two how those decisions are made. It is rarely an easy decision and one that involves talking with a number of agencies. TCSC has developed guidelines to refer to when making decisions about school delays and cancelations. Click here to see the guidelines.

The best way to keep informed about school closing and delays is to make sure your information is up-to-date in the school’s Harmony system.  The automated calling system, School Messenger,  uses this information to contact you by phone, email, and/or text.  You can also get the most up-to-date information on Twitter (@TiptonSuperin, @TiptonSchools), Facebook, Tipton Community School Corporation’s website, or any of the local media outlets. Decisions are made as early as possible and usually before 6:00 a.m.

With our transportation routes and bus stops, it will be very important to make sure our children have warm coats, gloves, hats, and scarves as they walk to and from the bus stop and while they wait for their bus. Inclement weather will most assuredly result in our buses being delayed by drivers navigating wet, snowy, slushy, or icy roadways. If you have sidewalks in your neighborhood, please encourage your neighbors to keep their walks cleared of snow and ice during these winter months. In addition, please remind your children that while they may see vehicles approaching, the drivers may not see them. Being aware of their surroundings is even more important when the weather is poor.

Finally, we would like to have your children in school every day that we are in session. However, we will always respect your decision as a parent when it comes to the safety of your child(ren). Together, we will continue to provide great opportunities for our children and prepare them for their future successes.

Cold Weather Tips

Winter weather in Indiana always presents some challenges and adjustments to be made.  When considering to delay or cancel school because of low temperatures or low wind chill factors, we do not have a set policy; however, as a general rule, we will look to delay/cancel school if air temperatures drop to or below -10 Fahrenheit or -20 wind chill or a combination that creates a potential for frostbite for exposed skin in 30 minutes or less.  Included here is a link that provides a chart on temperature, wind speed and wind chill: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/cold/wind_chill.shtml.

Due to the cold, we ask that ALL students remain indoors until the bus arrives. It may take a little longer than normal to get children picked up.

With Indiana’s winter weather, we know we need to make adjustments for the weather in our routines. Adjust your driving for road conditions, walk carefully on icy roads and sidewalks, dress appropriately for the weather, etc.

Parents are also urged to make sure their children are dressed appropriately.  A number of students come to school without coats. If your child needs a coat, hat, or gloves, contact your child’s school.  Sometimes we can help with that issue.
