Posted by in Shared Posts
     Kindergarten Registration/Roundup 20172018

We will be holding a Kindergarten Registration on Tuesday, April 11th  from 4-‐ 7 PM in the Tipton Elementary School computer lab. This will be an open enrollment date. This is a time for parents to come in and register online their child for kindergarten. Parents will sign their child up for an appointment to come in and work with our teachers at the end of May. We will have the specific dates at open registration.

Just as a reminder, your child needs to be 5 years of age by August 1, 2017 to be able to attend kindergarten. At registration we need your child’s original birth certificate, shot records, and any court documents.

School Delays and Closings

As we all know, Indiana weather can be very unpredictable. During the past several years, we have seen an increase in inclement weather. It looks like that may hold true again this year. You will be hearing of school delays or closings and may even wonder a time or two how those decisions are made. It is rarely an easy decision and one that involves talking with a number of agencies. TCSC has developed guidelines to refer to when making decisions about school delays and cancelations. Click here to see the guidelines.

The best way to keep informed about school closing and delays is to make sure your information is up-to-date in the school’s Harmony system.  The automated calling system, School Messenger,  uses this information to contact you by phone, email, and/or text.  You can also get the most up-to-date information on Twitter (@TiptonSuperin, @TiptonSchools), Facebook, Tipton Community School Corporation’s website, or any of the local media outlets. Decisions are made as early as possible and usually before 6:00 a.m.

With our transportation routes and bus stops, it will be very important to make sure our children have warm coats, gloves, hats, and scarves as they walk to and from the bus stop and while they wait for their bus. Inclement weather will most assuredly result in our buses being delayed by drivers navigating wet, snowy, slushy, or icy roadways. If you have sidewalks in your neighborhood, please encourage your neighbors to keep their walks cleared of snow and ice during these winter months. In addition, please remind your children that while they may see vehicles approaching, the drivers may not see them. Being aware of their surroundings is even more important when the weather is poor.

Finally, we would like to have your children in school every day that we are in session. However, we will always respect your decision as a parent when it comes to the safety of your child(ren). Together, we will continue to provide great opportunities for our children and prepare them for their future successes.

Cold Weather Tips

Winter weather in Indiana always presents some challenges and adjustments to be made.  When considering to delay or cancel school because of low temperatures or low wind chill factors, we do not have a set policy; however, as a general rule, we will look to delay/cancel school if air temperatures drop to or below -10 Fahrenheit or -20 wind chill or a combination that creates a potential for frostbite for exposed skin in 30 minutes or less.  Included here is a link that provides a chart on temperature, wind speed and wind chill: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/cold/wind_chill.shtml.

Due to the cold, we ask that ALL students remain indoors until the bus arrives. It may take a little longer than normal to get children picked up.

With Indiana’s winter weather, we know we need to make adjustments for the weather in our routines. Adjust your driving for road conditions, walk carefully on icy roads and sidewalks, dress appropriately for the weather, etc.

Parents are also urged to make sure their children are dressed appropriately.  A number of students come to school without coats. If your child needs a coat, hat, or gloves, contact your child’s school.  Sometimes we can help with that issue.

Student Transfer Application

Tipton Community School Corporation is accepting transfer student applications.  If parents wish to transfer their student, please fill out the application or stop by the Administrative Office at 1051 S. Main St. to pick up an application.  If you have any questions, please call 765-675-2147.

Effective July 1, 2016, all transfer requests that exceed the available openings in a particular grade level will be subject to a lottery drawing to determine the accepted applications.  If requests received between July 1 and July 29 exceed the available openings, a lottery drawing will be held from those requests to determine which requests will be accepted.  If a drawing  is necessary, it will be held during the Board’s regular meeting scheduled for August 9.  Additional transfer requests may be accepted through January 30 only if openings are available for the given grade level.  Transfer requests that were approved prior to July 1, 2016, have a secured spot for the 2016-2017 school year and will not be part of a potential lottery.

WeatherBug's Lightning Alert System at Tipton

Tipton Community School Corporation is a WeatherBug School. The WeatherBug Program collects weather data from our local site. This information is available to anyone in the community. Individual only need to download the program on their computer or app on their smartphone to receive weather information directly from Tipton. (Google WeatherBug)

TCSC included the Lightning Alert System in the project. The outdoor alerting system is a valuable community tool in alerting not only school patrons, but also patrons of the city park, the baseball diamonds, and fairground participants when lightning is in the immediate area. This system will sound a horn when lightning is detected eight miles away. This is a warning that people outside should seek shelter. (Click on the Blog's title to see full article including a map showing the range of the Lightning Alert System.)

Approximate range of the Lightning Alert Horns at TCSC.
When lightning is within 8 miles of the school, a fifteen (15) second alarm will sound. When lightning has cease to exist within this range for at least thirty (30) minutes, an all-clear signal will be given which is a series of three (3) short alarms of (5) seconds in duration each. Lightning alerts will also be received through individuals’ downloaded computer and phone applications.

The alarms will be activated between the hours of 6:00 am through 10:00 pm. This will prevent the alarms being sounded through the night or early morning hours.

Social Media Safety Info for Parents

In the corporation’s last newsletter, a web site was shared on how parents can keep their children safe when using electronic devices. Netsmartz Workshop (http://www.netsmartz.org/Parents ) provides tips for parents when children use cell phones, email, gaming, social networking and others. In addition, WLFI (Channel 18, Lafayette) recently aired a segment “Decoding digital teens: How to crack the codes.” (http://wlfi.com/2016/02/04/decoding-digital-teens-how-to-crack-the-codes/ ).  This gives parents insight on what the different abbreviations and codes mean.  CNN also recently aired a piece that may be helpful to parents on Social Media Red Flags (http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/25/health/social-media-red-flags-for-parents/).

Children are more often approached by predators when using cell phones. Parents are encouraged to be vigilant and be aware of what their children are doing and with whom on their devices. They should report any suspicious activity to the proper authorities. Hopefully, it will never happen. But watching the news, we all know that it can happen.
