5th Grade Balloon Launch

Reported by 5th Grade Students Tori and Khloe. The fifth-grade students at Tipton Elementary received a ,700 grant, that Mrs. Patricia Herron wrote, from the Tipton County Foundation and a High Ability Grant to participate in a Balloon Launch that will send materials and insects into the sky. We will see how these items are affected by the atmosphere and altitude. When we get the materials and insects back, we will examine them and see if they are acting the same and still alive. On May 3rd at 9:00 Captain Brian Tanner, the owner of Spaceport Indiana, will be visiting our 5th-grade classes. He will be talking to us about the Balloon Launch. We will receive some detailed information about what to expect during this science experiment. Brian Tanner's visit with us will kick off our Balloon Unit with Spaceport Indiana. Spaceport Indiana can offer customers reliable launch services for a variety of purposes. The staff at Spaceport Indiana have over 20 years of launch experience while being able to cover a wide range of applications. The ability to get to an altitude representative of 1% of Earth's atmosphere offers scientists, engineers, and designers unique insight regarding the performance of new and existing technology. If you prefer a higher altitude launch, they can help with planning, safety, debris field analysis, and decision on SRM vs Hybrid, etc. The customers that launch with Spaceport can range from pharmaceutical companies to military customers. There is a growing need to understand the effects of radiation, extreme cold, extreme temperature changes, and power requirements for technologies that will be used near space. From the natural events like hurricane Katrina to man-made events like the war in Iraq we've created a new set of requirements to share data and cover a greater area, sometimes in a very short time frame. Our school is participating in their "BalloonSat Program." We are doing a 5th-grade experiment by launching a balloon with payloads to the edge of space. We are using larger balloons to reach altitudes approximately 20 miles into the atmosphere. Students choose the payloads in their classroom with supervision by their teacher, after they visit with a Mission Specialist. They explain about space environment and the instruments used at the schools launch site. These students, teachers, and parents all think this is an excellent experiment for the students to experience and to participate in. This helps us meet the Indiana requirements and science standards.

WeatherBug's Lightning Alert System at Tipton

Tipton Community School Corporation is a WeatherBug School. The WeatherBug Program collects weather data from our local site. This information is available to anyone in the community. Individual only need to download the program on their computer or app on their smartphone to receive weather information directly from Tipton. (Google WeatherBug)

TCSC included the Lightning Alert System in the project. The outdoor alerting system is a valuable community tool in alerting not only school patrons, but also patrons of the city park, the baseball diamonds, and fairground participants when lightning is in the immediate area. This system will sound a horn when lightning is detected eight miles away. This is a warning that people outside should seek shelter. (Click on the Blog's title to see full article including a map showing the range of the Lightning Alert System.)

Approximate range of the Lightning Alert Horns at TCSC.
When lightning is within 8 miles of the school, a fifteen (15) second alarm will sound. When lightning has cease to exist within this range for at least thirty (30) minutes, an all-clear signal will be given which is a series of three (3) short alarms of (5) seconds in duration each. Lightning alerts will also be received through individuals’ downloaded computer and phone applications.

The alarms will be activated between the hours of 6:00 am through 10:00 pm. This will prevent the alarms being sounded through the night or early morning hours.
