Cold Weather Tips

Winter weather in Indiana always presents some challenges and adjustments to be made.  When considering to delay or cancel school because of low temperatures or low wind chill factors, we do not have a set policy; however, as a general rule, we will look to delay/cancel school if temperatures drop to or below -10 Fahrenheit or -20 wind chill or a combination that creates a potential for frostbite for exposed skin in 30 minutes or less.  Included here is a link that provides a chart on temperature, wind speed and wind chill: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/windchill/index.shtml.

Due to the cold, we ask that ALL students remain indoors until the bus arrives. It may take a little longer than normal to get children picked up tomorrow morning.

With Indiana’s winter weather, we know we need to make adjustments for the weather in our routines. Adjust your driving for road conditions, walk carefully on icy roads and sidewalks, dress appropriately for the weather, etc.

Parents are also urged to make sure their children are dressed appropriately.  A number of students come to school without coats. If your child needs a coat, hat, or gloves, contact your child’s school.  Sometimes we can help with that issue.

ISTEP scores for 2015 have been released, and as expected, the scores at Tipton Community School Corporation are much different than in previous years. Because of a variety of well-publicized issues with the test itself, we have little confidence that this is an accurate reflection of the skill level and success of our students. Based on previous performance and the other multiple measures of success we use, we know this is very uncharacteristic of our schools.

The Spring 2015 version of ISTEP+ measured student progress on the new college- and career-ready Indiana Academic Standards in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. These standards, which were first taught during the 2014-15 school year, represent higher-level thinking skills and are more challenging for students. The results of the new ISTEP+ test reflect an increase in expectations regarding students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Because the 2015 ISTEP+ was the first state assessment to be based on Indiana’s new, more rigorous college and career ready standards, these scores are not comparable to previous pass rates. The 2015 ISTEP+ results instead established a new baseline for student progress towards college and career ready benchmarks.

Regardless, you can be confident we will review problematic areas of curriculum and work to ensure our students are mastering the skills necessary to succeed at a high level. Teachers are working hard to integrate the new curriculum standards and prepare students for yet another new testing format for 2016.  With a much improved test we fully anticipate improved scores, reflective of our high achieving district.

We support the efforts of legislators to retain 2014 school grades and "hold harmless" all Indiana school districts for their 2015 ISTEP performance.

TCSC ISTEP scores compared with state average.  Scores represent the percentage of students passing the ISTEP+.
